Alphabet Handprint Book

When my son was two he came home from a morning at Mother’s Day Out with a cute little red handprint apple. While I didn’t think he was ready to learn the alphabet yet, I did cherish that little handprint and I knew that when it came time to learn the alphabet we would have to use this idea and make a book of handprints.

Last year for 3-year old preschool we loosely “studied” a letter each week or two. During that time we would make a handprint for that letter. I printed the letter and corresponding word on cardstock, painted Josiah’s hand with acrylic paint and once dry, let him add the embellishments (which is why Jesus is upside down and there are some funky eye placements!)

I tried using washable paint, but it just didn’t show up as clear as acrylic (Compare the white from the bunny and the cow to see what I mean.). If you decide to use acrylic paint, prep your area, put old clothes on, and have a wet rag ready. We also did this near the sink so that we could quickly wash it off when finished.

This is totally art focused on the product and not the process. I typically choose art experiences that are the other way around, but like I said, I fell in love with that little handprint and had to have more! So this project was a little more for me than him. Although I know he enjoyed doing it. And of course now we have a nice book enjoy together.
